Mitch Cahn

Mitch Cahn is the president of Unionwear, a manufacturer of hats, backpacks, messenger bags, scrubs, and safety vests in Newark, NJ.  Mitch started Unionwear in 1992 with fifteen sewers and a contract to make ballcaps for Ralph Lauren. 18 years later Unionwear has 120 workers and is the favorite brand of promotional gear for unions and political campaigns nationwide, and is also a principal textile supplier to the military, homeland security, post office, and state and federal government.  Presently, Unionwear's growth areas are as a contractor to garment industry manufacturers looking to reshore for economic reasons, and for organizations looking for alternatives to sweatshops. Unionwear is featured on the US department of commerce web site for their successful implementation of lean manufacturing and on the HUD web site for their creative use of public incentives to subsidize labor costs.  Mitch is the chair of the WIB Business and Economic Development Committee for the City of Newark, NJ, and the president of Made In Newark, an organization of 75 manufacturers organized to promote Newark's manufacturing base.
